Role Purpose

The Head of Finance and Operations is responsible for ensuring the financial health, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability of Teach For Malaysia. This role provides strategic leadership and oversight across finance, budgeting, technology, events, compliance & governance and core operational functions to enable the organisation to deliver on its mission with excellence. They will also lead and develop a high-performing team to uphold strong governance and operational resilience across all areas of the organisation.

Principal Accountabilities

This role will oversee the Finance, Operations, Technology and Events teams.

  1. Driving formulation and implementation of annual org-wide strategy and budget process across TFM’s strategic pillars, including generating buy-in from stakeholders to ensure that the organisation is able to effectively translate TFM’s annual strategic plan into actions with measurable impact. 
  2. Leading an organisational transformation journey by designing, improving and implementing strategic and operational planning & processes.
  3. Overseeing financial management and reporting, financial governance as well as driving the Audit and Risk Committee agenda to mitigate risks, uphold financial integrity and maintain financial health.
  4. Collaborate with the fundraising team to develop a diversified and sustainable funding base and generate additional funding opportunities for the organisation by leveraging especially on ESG frameworks, so that the organisation has a healthy cash runway.
  5. Oversee office operations, compliance, events and technology scope, ensuring statutory adherence, delivery of impactful events and seamless digital transformation in order to enhance TFM’s operational effectiveness, drive efficiency, ensure strong and conducive experience for employees and position the organisation for scale and future growth.
  6. Uphold the integrity of existing processes; review, design and implement new systems and processes when needed to continuously improve the overall effectiveness of the organisation.

Technical/ Functional competencies:

  • Proficient in creating financial models, planning, setting and monitoring budgets.
  • Strong business and financial acumen.
  • Process expertise – proven track record in designing, implementing, maintaining and reengineering systems and processes.
  • Chartered Accountant qualification is an added advantage.

Leadership competencies:

  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to manage multiple streams of work, and independently prioritise tasks
  • Strong desire to learn new things and grow professionally
  • Ability to be adaptable in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and dynamic environment

Experiences & qualification

  • Minimum experience of 7 years, which includes significant leadership and managerial roles and expertise in strategic planning, corporate strategy and finance.
  • Experience engaging with Board of Directors or Board-level executives is highly preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal skills and excellent proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
  • Working experience in management consulting is an added advantage.
  • Experience in management consulting is an added advantage
  • Experience to non-profit organisations or social enterprises is desirable.
  • A solid understanding of the education sector including key system actors and recent policy directions, is desirable.
