About The Opportunity

As part of an ongoing fractional HR partnership, One People Team (OPT) is working alongside a growing organisation in Malaysia to scale its engineering capabilities and backend platforms supporting financial services and payment infrastructure.

The organisation builds systems that support real financial transactions and critical financial infrastructure across Malaysia and ASEAN. As these systems continue to scale, there is a need to strengthen backend engineering capabilities, improve system architecture, and maintain high standards of reliability and performance.

This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale backend systems while contributing to engineering excellence and strengthening the overall technical capability of the organisation.

About The Role

You will design and build backend systems that power financial platforms and payment infrastructure.

This role focuses on backend engineering and system design, developing reliable and scalable services that support payment processing, financial transactions, and integrations with banks and payment networks.

As a senior engineer, you will play a key role in shaping system architecture, mentoring engineers, and ensuring platforms meet the high standards required for financial infrastructure.

You will work closely with product managers, engineers, and infrastructure teams to deliver secure and resilient systems used by banks, fintech companies, and enterprises.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Development

• Design and build backend services supporting financial platforms.
• Develop APIs and system components supporting payment processing, financial data handling, and platform integrations.
• Ensure systems are reliable, secure, and scalable.

System Design & Architecture

• Design distributed systems capable of supporting high transaction volumes and mission-critical workloads.
• Contribute to architecture decisions that improve platform scalability and performance.
• Ensure strong system reliability and fault tolerance.

Engineering Excellence

• Write high-quality, maintainable code and promote strong engineering practices.
• Participate in code reviews and mentor junior engineers.
• Continuously improve development standards and system quality.

Platform Reliability & Performance

• Ensure systems meet high standards for availability, performance, and data integrity.
• Support monitoring, observability, and operational practices for production systems.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with product managers and engineering teams to deliver platform capabilities.
• Collaborate with infrastructure and security teams to meet operational and security requirements.

Key Requirements

Strong Backend Engineering Experience

• 4–8 years of experience in backend software development.
• Strong understanding of APIs, microservices architectures, and distributed systems.

System Design Capability

• Experience designing scalable backend systems and services.
• Ability to reason about system reliability, performance, and data consistency.

Technical Proficiency

• Experience with modern backend technologies, programming languages, and cloud platforms.
• Strong understanding of database systems, messaging systems, and service architectures.
• Strong familiarity with AI coding tools and frameworks such as Claude and Cursor.

Fintech or Infrastructure Experience (Preferred)

• Experience working on payments, financial systems, or high-availability platforms is highly beneficial.
• Familiarity with security and compliance considerations in financial systems is a plus.

• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
