Job Overview

To provide technical and operational support in the preparation, maintenance, and management of biomedical engineering laboratories in accordance with program requirements and ETAC standards. The Biomedical Engineering Technician assists lecturers and students during laboratory and project sessions, ensures the functionality and safety of all equipment, and contributes to the effective delivery of practical and project-based learning.

Key Responsiblities

Lab support for teaching and learning

  • Prepare laboratory equipment, instruments and materials required for scheduled practical sessions
  • Assist academic staff during laboratory classes, demonstrations, and practical assessments.
  • Ensure the readiness and functionality of biomedical equipment before each class.
  • Provide technical guidance to students on the safe and correct use of laboratory apparatus and systems.

Equipment Maintenance, Calibration and Troubleshooting

  • Conduct periodic maintenance, functional testing of biomedical and electronic instruments such as infusion pumps, syringe pumps, etc.
  • Maintain detailed maintenance and calibration records in compliance with ETAC and institutional quality assurance requirements
  • Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment where feasible or liaise with vendors for servicing.

Laboratory Management and Safety

  • Ensure laboratories comply with occupational safety, health, and ETAC standards
  • Implement and monitor laboratory safety procedures, including emergency response and chemical handling protocols.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of equipment, tools, consumables, and spare parts
  • Supervise waste management and ensure proper disposal of biological and electronic materials

Project and Research Support

  • Provide technical support for student Final Year Projects (FYP), mini-projects, and applied research involving biomedical devices or instrumentation
  • Assist in equipment setup, testing, data acquisition, and integration of biomedical systems or prototypes
  • Collaborate with lecturers and students on simple design or fabrication work using available laboratory resources

Administrative and Logistical Support

  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and coordination of laboratory session across different courses
  • Prepare purchase request, quotations, and procurement documentation for laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Support accreditation documentation, internal audits, and equipment verification processes

Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in continuous improvement activities related to laboratory facilities, teaching resources, and safety systems
  • Attend relevant training or certification programs to enhance technical competency and support outcome-based education (OBE) practices
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for upgrading laboratory capabilities in alignment with programme PEOs, PLOs and emerging biomedical technologies

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related engineering technology field.
  • Working experience – relevant experience in biomedical, hospital, or academic laboratory setting is an advantage
  • Specific domain expertise – Electronics or Medical Electronics
