Islands Petroleum is an independently owned fuel and lubes distributor, and the exclusive distributor for Mobil Lubricants in Papua New Guinea. Islands Petroleum operates bulk fuel and lubricant Depots and Distribution Centres in the Islands, Momase, Southern, and the Highlands regions. Our national head office is based in Kokopo.


We are currently seeking to recruit 3 Regional Accountants to join our Finance team and based at our regional offices in Lae, Port Moresby and Rabaul respectively.


The Roles & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Finance Manager and Chief Finance Officer (CFO), the Regional Accountants are responsible for applying accounting policies and procedures to ensure good maintenance of accounting records and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Providing advice, perform internal audit duties and provide trustworthy information about financial operations.
  • Perform Accounting Duties: Detailed accounting knowledge of GAAP and processes associated with Accounts Payable, Revenue Accounting, General Ledger, and Stocks.
  • Reviewing and Reconciling Accounts: Meticulously examine financial records, ensuring accuracy and identifying any discrepancies.
  • Reviewing Bank Statements: Review bank statements/bank reconciliation to confirm daily transactions.
  • Verification of cash collection: Verify and confirm daily cash collection and managing end of days cash, physical and pronto.
  • Internal Control Management: Oversee and enhance internal controls within their designated region. This involves safeguarding financial processes, preventing fraud, and ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Maintaining Financial Controls: Required to travel to other depots in that region. Maintain effective and efficient planning, execution, and coordination of work between HO Finance team and depot staff/management. Actively partner with HO Finance team to ensure effective controls are in place at depot level.
  • Monthly Reporting to Finance Manager/CFO: Present findings to upper management in the form of reports. Assist in finalizing EOM /EOY roll.


Candidate Requirements

The person we seek must have the following:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Commerce, Economics or related from a recognized tertiary institution or university.
  • Minimum 5 years proven work experience preferably in similar role
  •  Proven ability to provide end-to-end completion of month end process, audit preparation, process improvement and working in tight controlled environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to create and process financial spreadsheets.
  • Hands on experience in Pronto software or similar ERP
  • Exposure to complex retail environment, petroleum industry is an advantage.
  • A team player with good personality
  • A self starter and able to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interest in numbers, and an ability to audit and interrogate accounts.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate and engage with supervisory staff and management.
