Islands Petroleum (IP) is an independently owned fuel and lubes distributor, and the exclusive distributor for Mobil lubricants in Papua New Guinea. With the head office based in Kokopo, Islands Petroleum also operates bulk fuel depots in Rabaul, Kimbe, Konebada, Kavieng, Alotau, Popondetta/Orobay and Mt. Hagen as well as lubes and fuel distribution warehouses in Lae, Port Moresby, and Madang.


We are currently seeking for a Fuel Retail Manager with our Marketing Department to be based at our Port Moresby Office.


The Role & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Sales & Marketing, the Fuel Retail Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform inventory audits, analysis and forecast the supply and demand requirements to prepare and source reports for the purpose of presenting to the Senior Managers meetings (Monthly). This is to be reported to the PA to the Head of Sales & Marketing, engage with depot managers for monthly update on current regional issues.
  • Assigned as Account Representative Service Stations, this is for the purpose of skills development and succession planning. Attend regular training and development sessions, complete at least 10 hours of course material online over a 12-month period.
  • Manage the relationship at the level expected with Assigned Customer lists, including meetings with core customers.
  • Manage the effective relationship building between Islands Petroleum and the core strategic customers, allocate tasking to objectives in line with supporting and value adding to both new and existing retail customers.
  • Identify and grow business through new Service Station opportunities, using your business acumen you will assess the opportunities worth both strategic and value for money. Transition opportunities to wins using clear closing strategies. Seek assistance from the Head of Sales & Marketing Manager and keep the Head of Sales & Marketing Manager informed of developments, issues, or difficulties. 
  • Provide technical support, ensuring customer needs are being attended to. Develop a close relationship with the local Depot Managers, Engineer Manager and identify strategies in conjunction with the Depot Manager to better support customers interaction.
  • Liaise with Depot Managers in relation to technical support, make critical decisions based on value for money and travel to locations where Islands Petroleum establishments are and be proactive in including the depot manager in your activities.
  • Assist the Head of Sales & Marketing Manager in managing expectations, responsibilities regarding reporting standards.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Head of Sales & Marketing Manager to update on activities, ensure the CRM is populated with relevant information based on interpersonal findings, stress points and upsell opportunities. 
  • Work with the Business Development Manager (BDM) in transitioning new opportunities to the retail management role, attend meetings with the BDM to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
  • Assist Head of Sales & Marketing Manager in any other tasks deemed suitable for the support and smooth operation of the department.


Candidate Requirements

The person we seek must have the following:

  • Tertiary qualification in Business Management or related from a recognized tertiary institution.
  • Must have minimum 5 years analytical experience in fuels- pricing, ROI preparation, understand margin application, have experience in working in a retail role with fuels essential.
  • Exposure to a complex retail environment, petroleum industry is an advantage.
  • High level of commercial and financial business acumen
  • High level of MS Office and analysis reporting of high standard
  • Ability to recommend, develop, and implement business skills strategies and plans
  • Ability to understand and apply local commercial laws and regulations
  • Ability to recognize compliance, risks issues and situations
  • Knowledge of management systems and practices related to commercial initiatives
  • Ability to maintain objectives, rational perspectives while providing a logical, pragmatic and factual approach to problem solving.
  • Marketing skills, preferably in retail service stations  
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills
  • Excellent planning, time management and organizational skills
  • Must have a valid driving license.
